The Jesus And Mary Chain - Honey's Dead (1992)

Možná si říkáte, co tady dělá recenze na již skoro 20 let starou kapelu. Takový oldschool??? Možná jo, ale zatraceně dobrý. No a protože nedávno zde recenzovaní Black Rebel Motorcycle Club v mnohém na Jesus and Mary Chain navazují a jelikož bratři Reidovy plánují znovu reunion, nebude na škodu si připomenout jejich poslední geniální desku Honey's Dead.

The Jesus and Mary Chain jsou považování za jednu z nejlepších kapel britské kytarové scény. Tříakordové písně a kombinace vazbených kytar spolu se zvláštním lomozovitým pochmúrným zvukem plných všelijakých zvůků způsobilo na svou dobu oprávněný rozruch. Honey's Dead je sice o trošku horší než jejich debut Psychocandy (1985), ale určitě se nemá za co stydět.

Už na úvod na nás album vypálí jednu z nejlepších písní alba. Ostré dráždivé beaty, rytmické bicí a opravdu kontroverzní, nihilistické texty. "I wanna die like Jesus Christ, I wanna die like JFK, I wannna die in USA" zpívá Reid s opravdu velkou dávkou zanícenosti.

"Little skinny girl she's doing it for the first time .. and it feels fine". Rádoby romantická Teenage Lust se tak tváří jen na oko a doplňuje tak skvělé, temné texty, tak typické pro JAMC. Jěštěže album obsahuje i radostnější kousky. Taková Far Gone And Out vás zbaví všech myšlenek na depresivní nálady. Hey, Hey, Hey a jedem na Sugar Ray. Tahle píseň si dokonce zahrála v reklamě na Budweiser. Opravdu chytlavá a zajímavá. Miluju ten špinavý zvuk zkroucených kytar a vibrujících riffů. A když se k tomu přidá opravdu skvělý zpěv hlavních frontmanů, není co řešit.

Geniální riffy na začátku Cathfire nebo tracku Rollercoaster nedostanete z hlavy ani frenetickým bušením do omítky. No a kdyby vás to nebavilo a toužíte po komornějších, noiseových skladbách, tak balady Almost Gold nebo Sundown vaše přání jistě vyslyší. Nádherné písně.

Tohle album je dalším z mnoha titulů s přídomkem "must listen". Přináší na svou dobu inovativní zvuk, skvělé texty, nezapomenutelné melodie. Prostě je to jedno z nejnápaditějších alb historie rock and rollu. Stahujte!

Again working with Alan Moulder but now also using a live drummer on most tracks -- namely Monti from Curve, one of the Mary Chain's many descendants -- the Reids came back strong with Honey's Dead, on balance a more consistent and satisfying record than Automatic. There's a sense of greater creativity with the arrangements, while the balance between blasting static rampage and precise, almost clinical delivery is the finest yet, making the album as a whole the best straight-through listen since Psychocandy. Monti's drumming finally replaces Bobby Gillespie's properly; he's a much more talented musician than the Primal Scream overlord, using the warped funk hits familiar from Curve's work to the Mary Chain's advantage. Even the drum machine-driven cuts work better than before, especially the brilliant, coruscating opener, "Reverence." Burning with some of the best nails-on-chalkboard feedback the band had yet recorded, combined with a whipsmart sharp breakbeat, all it took was the finishing touch of Jim Reid's sneering lines like "I wanna die like Jesus Christ" to make it another stone-cold classic single from the band. Other winners include "Sugar Ray," with beats and melody so immediate and addictive the track was actually used for a beer commercial, of all things, and the steady slap and crunch of "Good for My Soul." If there's a danger in Honey's Dead, it's that the near bottomless pit of reworked melodies and lyrics had almost reached its end -- even the final track, "Frequency," combines both "Reverence" itself with the Modern Lovers' "Roadrunner" -- which made the stylistic shift on Stoned & Dethroned a logical follow-up. William and Jim Reid split all the vocals almost evenly, the former especially shining on the nearly gentle "Almost Gold," the closest the record comes to a sweet ballad.
