I'm Not There Original Soundtrack (2007)

S biografickými filmy slavných hudebníku se v poslední době roztrhl pytel. Po Cobainovi a Ianu Curtisovi z Joy Division tu máme filmík o Bobu Dylanovi, I'm not There. Film je zajímavý hlavně v tom, že Dylana zachycuje v různých období života a hraje ho několik různých herců, od Heath Ledgera, přes Christiana Balea až po Richarda Gerea nebo ženu (!) Cate Blanchett. Hudba a soundtrack samozřejmě nemůže chybět.

Tentokrát se tvůrci rozhodli hudbu k filmu vydat na dvou samostatných discích. Což samo o sobě vydá na pořádnou porci muziky. Nejzajímavější na tom je, že každá Dylanova skladba je interpretována jinými umělci. A v tom je právě tohle album unikátní. Schválně, zajímalo by vás jakým způsobem si poradí Eddie Vedder s písní "All Allong The Watchtower", která byla svého času i v repertoáru geniálního kytaristy Jimi Hendrixe? A co teprve interpretace hitu "I'm Not There" v podání legendy alternativního rocku Sonic Youth? Pořád nic? A co když vám ještě řeknu, že zde můžete zaslechnout i Karen O z Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Marka Lanegana nebo Glena Hansarda spolu s Markétou Irglovou zpívající You Ain't Goin' Nowhere?

Zbývající umělci už jsou spíše folkoví zpěváci typu Surfjana Stevense nebo Johna Doea. Stále kvalitní, ale už to není tak zajímavé, jako když Dylanovy hity zpívají rockoví interpreti. Právě tyhle covery mě baví nejvíc. Ať už to je již zmíněná All Along The Watchtower nebo Higway 61 Revisited od Karen O a Million Dollar Bashers, skupiny složené z kytaristů Sonic Youth, folk rockových Wilco a basáka hrajícího se samotným Dylanem

Moc velký znalec Dylana nejsem, to přiznám hned. Samozřejmě alba jako Highway 61 Revisited, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan nebo Blonde On Blonde znám jako každý jiný, ale většinu písní jsem v originále neslyšel, takže se ke kvalitě coverů vyjádřit moc nemůžu. Avšak co mě mrzí, že se na album nevešla moje srdcovka Like A Rolling Stone, Blowin In The Wind nebo Subterranean Homesick Blues. Naštěstí Just Like a Woman, obligátní Knockin' On The Heavens Door nebo I'm Not There nechybí. Tohle album rozhodně doporučuju, jednak na doplnění hudebního vzdělaní, jednak pro unikátní výběr interpretů a jednak proto, že je to Bob Dylan.

"I'm not there" is one of the great lost Dylan bootleg treasures — scary, soulful, halfway incoherent. The 1967 recording makes its street-legal debut on this soundtrack: Dylan is full of dazed dread, rambling about loving a lost soul who is going to stay lost and strumming country chords while Garth Hudson follows on organ. The man sounds chilled to the marrow when he growls, "I wish I was there to help her/But I'm not there, I'm gone." Real, real gone.

Nothing else here touches I'm Not There — it's just a good night at the Big Pink karaoke lounge. Eddie Vedder does his joker-and-thief groan for "All Along the Watchtower," Stephen Malkmus croons "Ballad of a Thin Man," the Hold Steady do "Can You Crawl Out Your Window" and Karen O yelps "Highway 61 Revisited." Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo assembled the band: Wilco's Nels Cline, Television's Tom Verlaine, Dylan bassist Tony Garnier. But almost nobody messes with the original arrangements, so a movie about Dylan's multiple identities gets a same-y soundtrack; they don't feel free to kick the songs around, which is what Dylan (or Jack White) would do. John Medeski duplicates the "Ballad of a Thin Man" organ solo, practically note for note, all the way through the song.

The old guys stand out, because they're less cowed by the material: Ramblin' Jack Elliott, John Doe, Roger McGuinn. If Willie Nelson is impressed by "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)," you can't hear it in his laid-back recitation with Calexico. So he sounds loose and freewheeling, compared to nervous young folkies like Sufjan Stevens and Jack Johnson. But Sonic Youth tackle "I'm Not There," adding fuzz guitar and Thurston Moore's bemused mumble, never forcing the song to make sense — the wisest possible approach.
